My son's teacher has told us on several occasions that "He is choosing not to do the work I give him". I think my future response to this will be, "Why are you choosing not to try something that will help him do the work you give him?"
Lots of answer to this eg. You are there to stimulate his mind, perhaps an approach to show enthusiasm and excitement in learning might help.
